Immigration solution eludes politicians

While politicians and pundits of all stripes rant endlessly about the immigration issue, they studiously avoid any attempt at solving the problem. Surely this issue is not so intractable as to prevent so called leaders and experts from coming up with a workable plan to fix it. Apparantly reason and common sense to not figure into the conversation about reform.
In the meantime, U.S. policy continues it's frontal assault on the Mexican family. Mexicans in this country without documentation are here to make money and support their families. Some pundits would have us believe they all want to become citizens and spend their lives here. In fact, most want to make a good amount of money here and return to their family, friends and communities. While they are working towards that goal, our policies prevent them from obtaining some kind of legal status to maintain their family relationships. So we have wives without husbands, children without fathers, etc. Anyone familiar with how families work know that the absence of a major family member has multiple consequences, none of them positive.
I wonder what it will take for our leaders to fashion and immigration policy based on genuine American ideals. Not holding my breath!
Maybe there is too much money being made as a result of the system we have in place. Certainly many employers are making extra money because they hire the cheapest labor available to maximize their bottom line.
